I painted ‘Together Green’ to express the sexual and romantic love I experienced with Karl Handley, whom I met at Burslem art school in 1964. We both liked the colour green and I respected his Christian beliefs which became part of my sexual feelings. These inspired the use of both religious and erotic symbols in future paintings. We were both young and artistic, in a relationship that we experienced in a new, more liberal sexual climate.
